Mercedes C. Marte Martinez

Mercedes Cordero Marte Martinez, daughter of Severo Cordero and Maria Schotborgh, born in Cumayasa, San Pedro de Macoris in the Dominican Republic on September 24, 1941. She was the penultimate of her parents 10 children, her siblings were: Plácida Figueroa, Altagracia Figueroa, Gertrudis Cordero, Hilario Cordero, Severina Cordero, Nelcida Cordero, Gladys Cordero, Juanita Cordero and Ana J. Cordero. She immigrated to the United States in 1964 and became a United States Citizen on May 22, 2001.

She was married to Hemenegildo Marte Martinez Sr. on August 1, 1963. This union was blessed with 7 children, the second child, Maria Martinez, sadly passed away shortly after her birth. Her husband Hemenegildo preceded her in death on July 24, 1989.

At the age of 18 Mercedes was drawn into a church by a rendition of a hymn “A grain of Salt” on that day she gave her life to the Lord and began her life of service. She ministered as an International Missionary throughout the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Puerto Rico and all across the United States. She held various positions in the churches she attended including President of the Women’s ministry and Treasurer, as well as working extensively as an instructor in the Bible Institute. She also became an Ordained Minister on July 12, 2002 and became the Pastor of Church Smyrna January 31, 2005.

Her wonderful life will forever be cherished in the heart of her children: Hemenegildo Marte Martinez Jr., Ana Cristina Martinez, Noemi Martes Martinez, Pedro Marte Martinez, Jose Daniel Martinez Sr. and Misael Martinez; her thirteen grandchildren: Daniel Martinez, Cristina Benitez, Ester Mahase, Alexis Martinez-Aultmam, Gilome Misael Martinez, India Noemi Martinez, Cristina Lilian Martinez, Jose Daniel Martinez Jr., Jordan Martinez, Michac Neal Martinez, Desiray Martinez, Sarah Faith Martinez, Alina Anabell Martinez; her great-grandchild: Joshua Daniel Benitez; and her devoted extended family and friends.

I look up to the mountains—
    does my help come from there?

Mercedes Cordero Marte Martínez, hija de Severo Cordero y María Schotborgh; nació en Cumayasa, San Pedro de Macorís, Republica Dominicana, el 24 de septiembre del 1941. Fue la penúltima de diez hijos, sus hermanos: Plácida Figueroa, Altagracia Figueroa, Gertrudis Cordero, Hilario Cordero, Severina Cordero, Nelcida Cordero, Gladys Cordero, Juanita Cordero y Ana J Cordero. Emigró a los Estados Unidos en 1964 y el 22 de mayo del 2001, fue nacionalizada como ciudadana de los Estados Unidos. 

Contrajo matrimonio con Hemenegildo Marte Martínez 1ro, el 1ro de agosto del 1963. Esta unión matrimonial fue bendecida con siete hijos. Lamentablemente, su segunda hija, María Martínez, falleció poco después de nacer. Mercedes fue precedida por la muerte de su esposo, el 24 de Julio del 1989.

A la edad de 18 años, Mercedes fue atraída hacia una iglesia mediante la interpretación del himno “Un Grano De Arena”; ese día ella entregó su alma al Señor y emprendió su vida de servicio. Ministró en el campo misionero internacional a través de la República Dominicana, Colombia, Puerto Rico y los Estados Unidos. Desempeñó varios oficios de servicio en las iglesias que asistió, entre ellos: Representante de ministerios de mujeres y Tesorera. Además, trabajó arduamente como instructora en el Instituto Bíblico. Fue ordenada al Pleno Ministerio el 12 de Julio del 2002 y el 31 de enero del 2005 inició su servicio pastoral en la Iglesia Esmirna.

Su maravillosa vida será por siempre atesorada en el corazón de sus hijos: Hemenegildo Marte Martínez 2do., Ana Cristina Martínez, Noemí Martes Martínez, Pedro Marte Martínez, José Daniel Martínez 1ro. y Misael Martínez; sus trece nietos: Daniel Martínez, Cristina Benítez, Ester Mahase, Alexis Martínez-Aultmam, Gilome Misael Martínez, India Noemí Martínez, Cristina Lilian Martínez, José Daniel Martínez 2do., Jordan Martínez, Michac Neal Martínez, Desiray Martínez, Sarah Faith Martínez, Alina Anabell Martínez; su bisnieto: Joshua Daniel Benítez; y su dedicada y extensa familia y amistades.
